More than a Beach Cleanup

Our large-scale cleanups are hands-on and engaging community beach cleanups held across the islands. With a focus on fun and education, our goal  is to take grass-roots action to inspire global change. Plastic Pollution is an overwhelming issue and with the help of thousands of volunteers, over half a million pounds of debris have been removed from our coastlines. However, what we’ve learned along the way is that cleaning can only do so much. It is not the solution; cleanups are the gateway to behavior change. After spending a couple of hours doing the hard work with the SCH crew, we know that you will never look at plastic the same.Sustainable Coastlines Hawai’i cleanups are immersive, inspiring people to look deeper into the products they purchase and use on a daily basis. Together, we can turn off the tap to plastic pollution by changing how we consume and asking more from the businesses that provide us with goods and services. We’ll never ask you to be perfect at cleanups, just to take notice and be part of a community of positive change.

What can I expect from a large-scale cleanup?

All we ask you to bring is a reusable water bottle, reef-safe sunscreen, an open mind, and your ʻohana. The rest is on us as an offering for your time and efforts:

  • Cleanup supplies like gloves, bags, buckets, sifters, knives, and loppers (**volunteers are welcome to bring their own tools)
  • First-aid kits, hand sanitizer, and a safety briefing for volunteers
  • Water stations for refilling your reusable water bottle
  • Interactive activities for all ages with our trained SCH Educators, keiki games, and workshops
  • Live music and guest speakers
  • local vendors, farmers, and sustainably-sourced food options

**side note: we can almost always use volunteers to bring trucks to haul debris at cleanups!

How do I get involved in the next Large-scale Cleanup?

We invite participants to step outside of the classroom or the office, and attend hands-on beach cleanups and other experiences. By getting their hands dirty cleaning beaches across Hawaiʻi or learning about soil and composting at Full Circle Farm, we gain first-hand exposure to the severity of the plastic pollution problem as well as the solutions available for “turning off the tap”.
