ʻĀina Momona is a Native Hawaiian 501(c)(3) organization that aims to achieve environmental health and sustainability through restoring social justice and Hawaiian sovereignty. Led by a board of exceptional Native Hawaiians and talented staff, the organization works to restore fragile ecosystems, promote cultural rights and practices, enhance community well-being, and advocate for native rights and social justice. Their land base is Keawanui Fishpond and Cultural Learning Site, a 55-acre, loko kuapā (closed wall fishpond) on the south shore of Molokaʻi where they educate the community on the value and ingenuity of these systems. Executive director, Walter Ritte, has spent over 25 years working to restore loko iʻa (Hawaiian fishponds), and the organization's staff work year-round to maintain and restore Keawanui using the wisdom passed down by their kūpuna. The revitalization of traditional loko iʻa systems is paramount to creating a sustainable, just, equitable, and pono future for the kānaka people of Hawaiʻi.
